Frankie and Bennys’ Specials Menu
We are Frankie and Bennys fans in this household, you can see our previous reviews of the menu here and cocktails here. So when we were told about the new Frankie and Bennys’ Specials Menu we were interested to see what treats it offered.
We headed to Frankie and Bennys in Halifax to try some dishes from the Specials Menu and because we wanted to let you see a wide selection of the menu we chose four options from each course. The Frankie and Bennys’ Specials Menu costs £10.95 for 2 courses or £13.20 for 3 courses and offers a choice of five starters, twelve main courses and four desserts so there is a good selection of dishes to choose from including two vegetarian starters and main courses. It’s available from Sun-Thurs.
We started with BBQ Chilli Wings, Warm Dough Sticks with Garlic Butter Dip, Crab Bruschetta and BBQ Pulled Pork Potato Skins. The starters were all delicious, the children particularly enjoyed the dough sticks (4 large dough sticks, great flavour and the garlic butter dip was delicious) while my favourite was the potato skins which were stuffed full of tasty pulled pork. The chilli wings were very tasty but didn’t particularly taste of chilli, this dish felt smaller than all of the other starters, possibly because you only got 4 wings but they were good! The crab bruschetta was very fresh tasty and 3 small bruschetta made a lovely starter and it looked lovely. We would happily order any of the starters again because they were all very good.
We were less impressed by the main courses, they were just a little bland, particularly after the really good starters. We tried the Double Pepperoni Pizza, Meatball Siciliana Calzone, Ranch Burger and Bacon Bolognese Bake. Our favourite was definitely the meatball calzone which was stuffed with large meatballs and pepperoni and had a delicious rich tomato sauce that we really enjoyed, we would order this again because the flavour was herby and tasty. We felt we would probably share that and another dish in future because it was quite large and we would like to try other dishes from the menu too next time.
The ranch burger was ok, not the best burger we have ever tasted, there was nothing wrong with it but we felt it could have used more seasoning and perhaps been more charred to give it some deeper flavour. The bacon bolognese bake was nice but because it was gnocchi rather than pasta it felt a bit too heavy for our tastes and we would have preferred it had it been made with some kind of pasta to make it a bit lighter.
Finally from the main courses I wanted to mention the Double Pepperoni Pizza and sadly it was incredibly greasy, this seemed to be completely down to the fact that there was too much pepperoni on the pizza. It’s not often I would say that there was too much topping on a pizza but sadly when it’s pepperoni it does just create too much grease and we felt that we had to blot the pizza before we could eat any and the children even complained that it was greasy and didn’t really eat any of what we thought would be their favourite main dish. They really enjoyed the burger though which was surprising because they wouldn’t normally be interested in burgers.
The desserts were very popular with the whole family. The four options are Apple and Raspberry Crumble, Salt Caramel Cheesecake, Mint Choc Waffle and Banoffee Brownie. I’ll start by saying that sadly the restaurant didn’t have the mint choc ice cream for the Mint Choc Waffle but we were offered a selection of different options on what we could have as an alternative which was nice, we opted for plain vanilla ice cream knowing that this was the children’s favourite and we felt this would allow us to taste the waffle anyway which is obviously a key part of the dessert. The waffle was a great texture, I normally don’t like waffles because they can often be hard but this one was nice and soft and quite large. This pudding was a great size and looked lovely!
Also, as I started writing up this review I noticed that we hadn’t actually tried the Apple and Raspberry crumble that is on the specials menu, having been served an Apple and Cinnamon Crumble from the lunch menu by mistake. But it was very tasty and I would think fairly similar to the one on this specials menu. Lots of large apple chunks, tasty crumble topping and custard, yum!
The Salt Caramel Cheescake was Daddy Ramblings favourite, creamy and a very nice caramel flavour. He would order it again and again because a good cheesecake is quite difficult to find!
My favourite was definitely the Banoffee Brownie, rich chocolate brownie topped with slices of fresh banana, heavenly toffee ice cream, whipped cream and toffee sauce, very moreish!
Overall we were impressed by the Frankie and Bennys’ Specials Menu, the starters and desserts were particularly good. We weren’t as impressed by the main courses but the dishes were ok, the only real negative was that the Double Pepperoni Pizza was very greasy.
The experience at Frankie and Benny’s in Halifax is great with children, they really look after you, making sure that you are happy with food, the kids have balloons and kids packs and offering alternatives if needed. The staff are very attentive and go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
