Getting a Move On With Proper Packing
There’s a saying that goes “all politics is local.” Fortunately, the same is not true of moving. While, yes, you will need to know your local moving and storage companies, streets, rent figures, etc., there remain some general, universal principles of moving residences that apply to you no matter what city, state, or country you live in. For that reason, a resident of the UK and a Floridian (and a Californian for that matter) could all benefit from a refresher course on packing, which is precisely what this post will offer.
Unfortunately, if you’re a single parent that means you’re the one that has to do all of the work of packing, loading up the truck, unpacking, and setting stuff up. For the aforementioned Floridians, even if you hire Fort Lauderdale movers to help you with hauling your stuff into a Florida self storage unit, there’s still going to be a lot of packing you’ll need to do.
The packing is key! Here are some tips to help make it easier for you:
Gather Before Packing – Once you start packing, you’ll get into a groove that will make it easier for you to get everything boxed and ready to move quickly. You don’t want to have to stop and wait just because you run out of packing tape, boxes, or newspaper. Make sure that you have everything you need before you start packing, and you can blitz the packing and get it done!
Seal Properly — Even if you’re just moving your stuff a few miles down the road, you want to be sure that it’s all packed and sealed properly. If boxes are unsealed, they are more likely to be unstable and fall in transit. The movers will find their job much easier if you seal the boxes properly.
Find Uniform Boxes — Buying boxes from U-Haul can be very expensive, but try and find boxes that are all the same size if possible. It will make packing and stacking much easier, and it will allow the movers to plan their trips more easily. Get boxes from your local supermarket or liquor store, and try and find boxes of the same size.
Label Carefully — If you want to cut back on the sorting you’ll need to do when you arrive at your home, make sure to label all of the boxes clearly. You’ll want to ensure that the boxes are visibly marked, and number them if it helps you to sort the items inside. Come up with a good system to help organize the boxes, and keep the labels visible and legible.
Draw Up an Inventory — This may seem time consuming, but it will help you to know exactly what you’re bringing. It will take a few minutes to type or write out an inventory of everything that’s being packed into the various boxes, but it’s worth the effort! When it comes time to unpack, you’ll immediately know where everything is.
Packing and moving can be stressful, but the tips above can help to take the pressure out of the task! Don’t make your first year anywhere, no matter what city or country you live in, an unpleasant one simply because of poor planning. Get your move on right!
